Safeguarding
Thabiti Alliance is committed to protecting the safety, dignity, rights and privacy of every child, family and vulnerable person who comes into contact with our work. Safeguarding is a condition of how we operate, not an optional programme activity.
Our core commitments
These commitments are drawn directly from our formal safeguarding policy, summarized here for clarity.
- Best interests of the child. Every decision that affects a child weighs that child’s interests as the primary consideration — not organizational convenience or donor preference.
- Zero tolerance for abuse, exploitation and retaliation. No exceptions for seniority, tenure, or founding status. No one who raises a concern in good faith is penalized for it, even where the concern cannot ultimately be substantiated.
- Dignity-preserving photography and storytelling. Reality may be documented; a person’s dignity is not sacrificed in order to document it. No poverty imagery, no humiliating before/after narratives, no unnecessary disclosure of private circumstances.
- Informed, purpose-specific media consent. Consent is sought separately for internal documentation, donor reporting, and public communications — consent to one does not imply consent to another, and it can be withdrawn at any time.
- No loss of assistance for refusing photography or publicity. A child or family that declines to be photographed, filmed, interviewed, or featured publicly receives exactly the same support as one that agrees.
- Safe reporting and independent escalation. A concern about a senior person, or about the organization’s own safeguarding lead, has a reporting route that does not pass through the person the concern is about.
- Responsible handling of beneficiary information. Beneficiary data is collected only for a specific, documented purpose, shared only with those who need it, and never held longer than that purpose requires.
- Safeguarding expectations for everyone connected to our work. The same standards apply to Board members, staff, volunteers, partners, contractors, donors and visitors — support does not entitle anyone to unrestricted access to a child.
Responsible documentation
Photography and video are a legitimate part of how Thabiti Alliance documents its work — for programme monitoring, verification, donor accountability, annual and grant reporting, and public communications. We do not prohibit this kind of documentation. What governs it is consent and safeguarding, not avoidance: every use is tied to a specific purpose, a specific level of consent, and the dignity standard above, so that evidence of real conditions can be shared honestly without exposing a child or family to harm.
